Show Hackful: Our startup Scirra

Hi there Hackful!

Our London based startup is called Scirra, and we make Construct 2 which is an HTML5 game creation engine. It's designed primarily for people who don't know how to code however professionals are using it for a variety of uses such as rapid prototyping.

Here's our website: http://www.scirra.com

Here's a short video showing how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RlSmkSbleI

We've been operating now for around 8 months and it's all going rather well!

Happy to answer any questions people may have and we are always happy to receive feedback and criticisms about any aspect of our business.

That's cool! Nice work guys, I can see teachers using this in their classrooms.

Also just thought I'd mention we both attending HN meetup last night and saw the presentation by Matt Slight and Elias Haase which is how we found this site :)

Hey! I watch Construct 2 from the sidelines while working on my own collaborative 3d game-making platform (http://craftstud.io/).

I really like what you are doing. Just realized you're only 2 guys, thought there were more of you!

My question: Do you plan on having anything more productive for scripting than the drag'n'drop / clicky approach? I realize this is great for beginners but the feedback I hear a lot is that it doesn't scale well once you get the gist of it (not a critic about Construct in particular, people say that of other game-making tools too).

I'm myself currently designing the scripting support for CraftStudio and I intend on having a hybrid approach with heavily enhanced text-based editing. Beginners would be able to just click around but power users would have the ability to type stuff while still enjoying the benefits of the improved UI. I'm not sure how/if this will pan out yet but I'm excited to try something different.

Anyway, best of luck for the future and keep on rocking!

Thanks! Just checked your engine out, looks cool and I see you made front page on HN :) Good luck with it!

This is amazing. I downloaded it, watched one quick tutorial and it seemed extremely simple and straightforward.

The commercial edition(s) has a good price tag for developers, not expensive at all.

Just out of curiosity, how do you determine that the term "Allowed for individual use up to $5000 in revenue. Once you earn over $5000 revenue from your Construct 2 related things you must upgrade to a Business License" is obeyed?

It's hard to get people to 'obey' license terms without lots of annoying DRM. Sorry I can't answer your question much better.

Any plans for OS X and/or iOS/Android versions?

We're aware of the demand and will be addressing it at some point :) Can't say much more I'm afraid!
