Ask HE: Should we use HACKFUL.EU as the primary domain name for Hackful Europe?

.COM use is widespread, but .EU doesnn't come with the recent SOPA laws attached.

Thoughts?

yes, makes sense.

how about making this project more known rather than wasting your energy on premature optimizations?

We are working on that also - we have a HackfulThon lined up. Do you have any suggestions for promotion?

Getting the word out on twitter would be awesome.

yes

register .eu and just link it as well. the more the merrier :) but I would move to the .eu as the primary one because it's more futureproof and it clearly states it's something to do with europe.

Register .eu but keep the .com Redirect all requests to .com to .eu and market hackful.eu only Too many domains/brands make it very difficult to market the product and make the brand "stick" to folks mind

Sounds just about right. why be under US jurisdiction when you can avoid that ;)

Have a .com web address? Know the legal risks

Yes. Not just because of SOPA, but also because it would make the name more recognizable as European.

5 points by danmaz74 about 1 year ago

Yes but remember to make a redirect from hackful.com

Of course! This is by Europeans and for Europeans...

I think we should move to hackful.eu, not only because of the Law Issue, but also because of the resemblance with the name, HACKFUL.EUrope

  1. Also, I thought .com was for companies that made money.
1 point by ravloony about 1 year ago

Yes, it stands for "commercial" but there's no restriction. +1 for .eu, makes much more sense.

1 point by kvein about 1 year ago

No! .eu doesn't say "Europe", .eu says "EU", a political concept. Are we endorsing that moribund institution?

2 points by interfix about 1 year ago

Well, .com says commercial, I would rather have .eu

2 points by val about 1 year ago

.com is just as silly, agree - .net or .org would have been much better matches.

2 points by interfix about 1 year ago

I hate the EU as much as the next guy, but using the .eu TLD IMHO doesn't imply an endorsement for the EU, just like using the internet in general doesn't imply an endorsement for the US military (which, after all, sponsored Arpanet).

sure

No.

2 points by dotcoma about 1 year ago

Why not?

2 points by aimes about 1 year ago

I don't see the reason why. And I think other things should be the priorities.

1 point by dotcoma about 1 year ago

Well, first of all I think hackful.eu(rope) makes a lot more sense that hackful.com(mercial) and looks neater. While I do agree that there are more important things to do than changing the TLD, I don't think it's a valid argument for not doing it, as the actual changes required to get it done would be small.

The domain is already registered, so why not use it as the main domain?

4 points by aimes about 1 year ago

Please elaborate as to why?

2 points by sigveseb about 1 year ago

sounds good!

2 points by nazgob about 1 year ago

do it! :)

2 points by axx about 1 year ago

Yep, makes sense to me!

yes. no sopa please.

also please create SSL for logins

https://hackful.eu/

(along with m.hackful.eu for small screens)

1 point by User about 1 year ago

go .eu - .com is the Corporate overlords.

1 point by defsix about 1 year ago

Sounds good but .EU? Really? Please let's consider something more hacker like. What about .IO?

hackful.io FTW

1 point by oemera about 1 year ago

Yes, I quite like eu domains as a concept and it suits the site.
