Exclusive to UK right now (I think that will change and I could be wrong) is http://gocardless.com/ they seem to be on the right path. I am not sure if will crunch credit cards or if they are just bank accounts.

We are using GoCardless at www.eatsocial.net

Technically it's a great solution but getting users to use this as a payment method is tough.

I was able to use barclay's MPI solution but you must have trading history for that.

There's always Moneybookers (now sigh "Skrill"). I don't know about their APIs, but as a service they've always been pretty great, and they've been around long enough to trust.

Plus their site is written in Perl (or so I assume from the URL file extensions), always a plus in my book.

Handling payments is always a PITA.

I have been using https://www.dalpay.com/, as they are the only Icelandic company (I am Icelandic) that provides an "all in one" solution - you don't need to jump through the hoops of getting a merchant account and who knows what else before you can start taking orders. After signing up with them I realized that us Icelanders have it pretty good compared with much of the world, very little paperwork and only minimal bureaucracy.

Their website may be butt-ugly, as is their order form unfortunately, but they do seem to know what they are doing and their rates are fair. They also don't seem to suffer from the disease that killed our banks in 2008, in case you were wondering. ;-)

The question isn't if it will work, but if the service has enough users.

For me most important thing is holding customer cc details in secure environment And having freedom to choose whatever payment gateway + merchant account you want.

Recurly will hold (and export) your customer details in secure environment and you are free to use any of supported gateways ( includes sagepay paypal etc) .

Google Checkout is working well but limited to working in the UK / US Stripe looks great but is US only. they've promised a Euro version but with no delivery date.. Thanks for the other links, ill take a look.

We're using 2checkout for http://www.nicereply.com, so far the only one providing merchant account+payment provider that's viable in europe. Or recur.ly if you want to mess with payment gateways (which I wouldn't recommend). Plus, stripe and https://samurai.feefighters.com/ have some kind of forms where you can let them know you want it in Europe. Go generate demand! :)
